“How in the world can I keep all these ever-increasing plates in the air?”

Have you ever asked yourself that question?

Running a business efficiently and giving your clients excellent service can be very demanding. Letting one of the plates fall can tarnish your reputation and it is difficult to restore your credibility.

Women in any profession, more than their male counterparts, have to prove themselves constantly to be successful. This is particularly true in the male-dominated financial services industry. Establishing credibility and keeping it strong is especially important for a woman’s prosperous financial services practice.

Add to that the reality that women often have more life responsibilities than men. Not only are they focused on their business and clients, but women are also the ones who typically have the major responsibility for nurturing their household, the children, her parents and even her spouse’s parents. And when the man in the house does take over a lot of the family needs, woman often feel stress about not being able to do more. Our society has instilled in all of us that women are the ones who are supposed to be nurturing the family.

Nevertheless, women are doing very well in the financial services industry, particularly with the growing number of women investors. Women want and deserve the same respect as men in this industry.

The financial power of women is considerable and is growing rapidly. In the United States, women control 51% of the private wealth. These women are looking for advisors they can trust and often turn to women.

But what happens when an unexpected life challenge comes along for you and there are even more demanding circumstances? Is it possible for you to maintain credibility as being reliably productive? How do you show your clients and business associates that you are still performing well?

~ It is important to be proactive in communicating often with clients to reassure them that you are attending to their investments. Don’t wait until questions arise as to whether you are keeping up.

~ Also maintain dialogue with co-workers and management so that they know how you are doing. This will reassure them that even though you may have adjusted your office work hours, you are still handling your responsibilities as always. And, if you need their support, having that close connection will make it easier to ask them for what you need.

~ For your own focus, keep your business goals in mind. Be clear with yourself in establishing your short and long-term objectives.

~ Commit to following a daily plan, even with all the distractions going on, so that you know you are moving forward toward meeting those goals. Feeling that sense of accomplishment will help you maintain confidence and enthusiasm for your work even when other parts of your life may be discouraging.

~ Do what you can to keep yourself physically strong and emotionally sound. Take time to eat nourishing meals and exercise regularly. Get as much sleep as you can. Give yourself breaks so that you can catch your breath. Even a few minutes at a time throughout the day can help.

~ Connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. Just talking over the situation can be supportive. Somehow, knowing that you are not the only one who is walking this rocky path can help you get through the rough spots to smoother ground.

Yes, women, you do often get the bulk of the family caretaking on your shoulders. With some strong strategies for efficiency in your business and attention to your self-care, you can maintain that exuberant productivity and achieve that healthy bottom line – in all aspects of your life!

By Erik Birkeland

For many young women the process of growing up was rather difficult. Of course this is subjective but to many female teenagers their life was full of problems. Not just any problems but big problems. These problems ranged from normal adolescent issues to truly serious issues like neglect, physical and/or psychological abuse. Many found an outlet through the abuse of drugs. Unfortunately, there are many drugs to abuse these days. One of the most prevalent is alcohol. So instead of dealing with the issues they are put off to a later date. For many that date comes too late. This abuse goes on through their lives and is fairly well hidden.

Once a family is created the art of hiding the abuse is that much more difficult. It is one thing to hide abuse from the spouse who isn’t around all day. However, children are highly focused on their parents and see everything that goes on. Interestingly the abuser can go on for years tricking themselves that they are cleverly hiding their addiction. Of course nothing is further from the truth. Ultimately the abuse is plainly visible for everyone to see. At this point a decision needs to be made by the sober spouse. Deal with this issue or ignore it. The status quo may seem like the easier way to go but only leads down a road of ruin. This road isn’t just for the parents but also the children. Since they have now learned how to abuse drugs and also how to hide this from the rest of world. Not a good situation. There are various ways to deal with the problem.

Drug Rehabilitation

Depending on the severity of the situation it may very well be the first step is drug rehabilitation. Drug rehabilitation is around the clock professional help to detoxify the body and deal with the withdrawals from the alcohol. The body gets accustomed to having alcohol in the system and once it is removed the body can have a severe withdrawal reaction. Once the physical effects of not having alcohol have been treated it is necessary to deal with the psychological effects.

12 Step Program

12-step programs are highly touted as a way to stay off of alcohol (or any other addiction). This program involves group therapy and having a sponsor. During this program you are to deal with the underlying issues of the addiction. When the person is feeling weak, upset etc. they are to call their sponsor who is to help them work through the situation. The goal is to work through the 12 steps and ultimately learn more about themselves and what has driven them to abuse in the first place. This works great as long as the person works well in group therapy. However many people do not deal well with this. Up to 95% of people fail in the 12-step program.

Non-12 Step Program

For women who are not open to truly dealing with their issues in a group then it is time to seek an alternative form of treatment. This should be done with a trained therapist in alcoholism. These treatments are tailored to the person with the addiction. They are focused on dealing with the root issues. Part of the therapy is behavioral modification. There are quite a few of these programs but they are harder to find, however well worth the search.

It goes without saying that dealing with the affliction of alcoholism is extremely difficult. But when a family is involved it is imperative to get help. The amount of damage done to the spouse and children is hard to estimate. In many situations the affliction is perpetuated in the children, as they become adults. If you find yourself with this problem then find the courage to talk to your spouse and get help. If you are the spouse of an alcoholic then realize that silence is not the way to deal with the issue. Your children’s futures are at stake.

Women Face Unique Financial Challenges. If you were to guess which issue women worry about most, would you guess family, health, time, stress, or maybe equal rights? According to a March 2000 gallop poll, the answer is their finances. This response may surprise you now, but consider the following list of financial issues unique to women.

Consider these results from a women-and-money incubator, and research by Bruce W. Most and William L. Anthes:

- “Women are more intimidated than men about financial issues

- Women earn less money than men

- Women are less prepared for retirement

- Women receive smaller retirement benefits

- Women live longer than men

- Women are poorer in retirement than men

- Women are more conservative investors than men”

We would also add

- Special difficulties for single mothers

- Women caring for elderly parents

- High-deductible health insurance plans cost women more

- Women may defer to men regarding financial decisions

- More women manage daily family finances

- Retirement issues because of divorce agreements

- Male-dominated financial services industry

Earnings Differences

It is a well-documented fact that women earn less than men do. A study by the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation as reported by Ellen Simon {AP}:”Women make only 80 percent of the salaries their male peers do one year after college…10 years after college, women earn only 69 percent of what men earn…Even after controlling for hours, occupation, parenthood, and other factors known to affect earnings,” the study found that one-quarter of the pay gap remains unexplained.

Most and Anthes report that “According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women working full-time, year-round, earn roughly 74 percent of what men earn… (and) workers in the age category of 45-54-the prime earning years for most people-women earned $516 a week while men earned $732.” It gets even worse for single mothers with young children whose “median income in 1998…was $14,248. This figure is the lowest among all family types, representing roughly one-fourth the median income of married-couples with children…and approximately three-fifths that of females with no children.”

Retirement Differences

Women are often less prepared for retirement than men. Most and Anthes also noted that a study that found 58 percent of baby boomer women had saved less than $10,000 in a pension or 401(k) plan, while baby boomer men had saved three times that. In addition, the fact that women live longer than men means that they need more money in their retirement than men do.

Investment Differences

Also, a 1997 study by Dryfus and the National Center for Women and Retirement Research showed that women investors were more worried than men about running out of money in old age, preferred more conservative investments, wanted fixed/steady returns, were more unnerved by stock fluctuations and worried more about investment decisions.

Social Security Retirement Differences

Of course, less money earned by women, means less money saved for retirement or contributed to Social Security benefits, and because women live 79 years on average while men live 72, women retirees are poorer in retirement than men. Most and Anthes note that according to the Administration on Aging “…half the elderly widows now living in poverty were not living in poverty before their husbands died. The picture is even worse for older women in many minority groups”.

Decision Making

The next generation of retirees may have been raised in an environment in which men handled the money decisions. More women actually pay the weekly bills, but they may have little knowledge of the larger family finances such as retirement plans, Social Security, IRAs, insurance, annuities, etc. because they may have deferred to their spouse’s decisions.

It is essential for women to understand the ‘big picture’ of their finances, especially for retirement, divorce, or death of their spouse. Because women make less than men, are less prepared for retirement, and receive smaller retirement benefits, they need to make sure that their husband’s retirement benefits will pass to them if their husband dies first. Because women may be more intimidated about asking questions of their attorney or financial advisor, they may miss crucial details (such as single-life annuity which may bring higher levels during the husband’s life but that ends when the husband dies first), or incorrect beneficiaries on life insurance policies.

Divorce

During a divorce, women may be more concerned about custody issues and keeping the house than their future retirement and may agree to forgo the 401(k). Single parenting brings a whole host of financial challenges, including lost wages from parenting responsibilities and childcare and babysitters. If the extra expenses and possibly lower income are not included in the divorce settlement, the single mother may find that she is unable to keep the house and she loses the two most valuable assets: the house and the 401(k).

Health Insurance

Women not only make less money than men, their health plan may cost more reports Mike Stobbe {AP}. When an employer changes to a high-deductible plan, it costs on average $1000/year more for women than for men due to mammograms, the cervical-cancer vaccine, Pap tests and pregnancy related services. This is unfair, but while the inequity exists, women must make an extra effort to contribute the difference to a Health Savings Account or savings program to avoid using credit to pay for the added medical bills. We have personally experienced the $4,000 deductible per year health insurance plan and, although it is better than no insurance, it can certainly make a dent in the family budget.

Care Giving

Another huge drain on women’s finances is caring for their aging parents. More women care for aging parents than men. However distasteful it may be to condense a daughter’s love for her parents into a discussion of money, this issue must be addressed so that women can prepare. Because of the aging baby-boomer population, these numbers will soon become staggering. If you add caring for young children into the mix at the same time, the financial results can be devastating.

What Should Women Do?

Because of the special issues facing women, it is crucial that women educate themselves about finances and the realities of financial gender inequity and plan for their future. The male-dominated financial services industry is just beginning to realize the unique financial planning issues for women. Make sure that your trusted advisors understand these issues and are helping you plan accordingly. Don’t be afraid to ask your advisors questions.

Summary Now is the time to begin planning for the future:

- Have a plan

- Increase your knowledge and understanding of financial matters

- Utilize trusted professional advisors to implement your plans

- Regularly monitor your progress.

By David Milton Peterson

With the economy slowly recovering from the worst recession since the depression, the number of homeless families are on the increase. A myriad of circumstances contribute to this new epidemic, but the sad reality is that everyday people are suffering from this problem. Homelessness doesn’t necessarily mean walking the streets and living in a box, it can mean anything from being displaced to living in the car.

Families that find themselves with no place to go run into particular problems with access to shelters. Many homeless shelters are designed to service individuals or single moms with young children. Since the problem with homeless families is a relatively new and unfortunate trend, shelters have not had time to revamp their programs to meet their needs.

Keeping families together is important, and many services by shelters are provided by separating men and women. For example, a lot of shelters operate dorm style housing, where multiple beds are in one room, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. They put men in one room and women in another. Families need space for themselves and an independent group, and facilities that are equipped for that type of situation are few and far between.

Another concern for families in shelters is the exposure to drugs and alcohol. Many families loose their housing due to economic hardships and not addiction. So exposing them to the problems of urban street homelessness is not the right environment for children to be in.

Finally, moving into a temporary shelter can disrupt the education of the kids. If a family looses their home, then technically their children have moved outside of the local school district. Many parents will not inform schools of their situation and choose to commute their kids to school. However, that is not practical for many situations, and kids are put in limbo while permanent housing is established.

Not only are kids affected by residency issues, but also loosing the continuity of going to their school and being around their friends has a tremendous impact. Taking them out of that environment will impact their study and social habits. Some shelters offer programs for educating children, but they are no where near the level of quality expected from schools. Also, the fluid and unstable lifestyle of being homeless makes it hard for children to develop long term and healthy relationships.

Not all homeless families are searching for shelters. Many have friends and other family members to rely on in times of hardship. But some of the displacement issues affecting shelter bound families also affect these as well. School is the number one concern, and sometimes their support is in the same community, and other times it is not. So, deciding what to do with the children is the first thing to think about.

Also, if the parents are working, having child care if necessary is huge concern for parents. Loosing a home is enormously disruptive, and every single routine established in the family is wiped away the moment the walk out the door with their things. Providing a safe place for kids is important. Hopefully, the friends or family that are hosting will have other kids in the house or adults around when the children are.

Those who are hosting need to consider some issues as well, because adding a new family to a home is a disruptive experience for them too. Planning on how to use space is important as well as setting boundaries and house rules. Things like making a laundry and cooking schedule should be thought about, in addition to who uses the bathroom for taking showers. A chore list should be put together and coordinating shopping and food storage is a good idea also. Addressing these details in the beginning will eliminate a lot of stress induced arguments later on.

Homeless families struggle in special ways and finding the right resource for them is a challenge. In addition to shelters and other friends or family members, churches and service organizations offer resources. Contacting the local pastor or social service agency will connect families with experts who have resources that nobody else has. They are also geared to addressing the special needs of families versus individuals.

Helping homeless families and getting them in permanent housing as fast as possible is the goal of everyone who is involved in fixing this crisis. Their special needs make it a challenge to provide resources, and keeping the family together can be difficult. Thankfully, most families have some resources available that will make the process of getting back on their feet a little easier while enduring this horrible crisis.
