The Up Shoppe offers an ongoing skills training program for community
women who are on Social Assistance, who have recently immigrated, and/or
who have not been employed in the formal economy for a length of time.
The focus of the Community Wages
Program is to offer pre-employment skills for entry level
jobs while allowing participants the opportunity to gain current
references and work experience for their resumes, to practice language
skills, and to interact in a positive and supportive work environment.
This program is participant driven from the point of intake; participants
are employed according to self-identified assets and goals in a variety
of general positions throughout NEWC and The Up Shoppe. Direct
supervision, consistent evaluations and referral to appropriate
employment resources challenge and assist program participants in setting
and obtaining their employment goals.
